Value of the gastric aspirate shake test.

چکیده
The results and predictive value of the gastric aspirate shake test are reviewed in 432 preterm babies admitted to a neonatal unit during a 3-year period. It is concluded that the degree of prematurity is a better indicator of the chance of developing idiopathic respiratory distress syndrome than the test itself.

Diagnostic value of gastric shake test for hyaline membrane disease in preterm infant
BACKGROUND Hyaline membrane disease (HMD) has remained a common neonatal problem and is a cause of morbidity in infants. The shake test can be used to assess whether surfactant is present in the infant's lungs at birth. OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to determine the usefulness and accuracy of gastric aspirate shake test for the diagnosis of two HMD. MATERIALS AND METHODS This was a d...
متن کاملBedside predictor of neonatal pulmonary morbidity
A simplified, single-step shake test has been performed on gastric aspirate samples from 85 preterm infants and a control group of 214 term infants. Respiratory symptoms were seen in 25 of 30 preterm infants with a negative or intermediate test, but in only 2 of 55 infants with a positive test (P < 0 001). No infant with a positive test developed respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) while RDS de...
متن کاملValidation of the RightSpotTM device for determination of gastric pH during nasogastric tube placement
Background: The RightSpotpHTM indicator is a new device designed to facilitate pH-based confirmation of nasogastric tube placement while minimizing exposure of the operator to nasogastric contents. Study objectives: In vivo and in vitro validation of the RightSpotpHTM indicator. Findings: Patients (23) undergoing general anesthesia had placement of a nasogastric tube and gastric pH electrode ca...
متن کاملGastric aspirate findings in neonatal pneumonia.
Yeung, C. Y., and Tam, A. S. Y. (1972). Archives of Disease in Childhood, 47, 735. Gastric aspirate findings in neonatal pneumonia. A study on the gastric aspirate findings in infants with features of neonatal pneumonia and in healthy controls is presented. Definite pneumonia was associated with thickly mucoid gastric fluid containing a high proportion of polymorphonuclear leucocytes. Healthy i...
متن کاملRapid test for lung maturity, based on spectroscopy of gastric aspirate, predicted respiratory distress syndrome with high sensitivity
AIM Respiratory distress syndrome (RDS) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in premature infants. By the time symptoms appear, it may already be too late to prevent a severe course, with bronchopulmonary dysplasia or mortality. We aimed to develop a rapid test of lung maturity for targeting surfactant supplementation. METHODS Concentrations of the most surface-active lung phospholipid...
